Karen E. Dvorscak, the beloved daughter of Cliff and Jean Bittorf, lived a life many of us dream of and is now honored in this memorial content. From an early age, Karen embodied kindness, thoughtfulness, and selflessness—qualities that she carried throughout her nearly 68 years of life. One close friend once remarked, “Karen was the responsible one.” Another said, “Karen could out clean Mr. Clean!” And yet another humorously noted, “Those who knew Karen understood her work ethic. She kicked butt... :) and was feared (haha) but loved!”
A proud 1974 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, Karen held various jobs, including working at a local movie theater and as a maid in a hotel, both of which underscored her remarkable work ethic. She later joined the Department of the Navy early in her adult life and, for nearly 40 years, served the Naval community and her coworkers with humility, compassion, and a meticulous focus on detail.
Throughout her career, Karen garnered numerous accolades and awards, steadily climbing the GS ratings to achieve a GS-14 position—all accomplished without a college degree, a truly remarkable achievement. Despite her success, Karen always remained gracious and caring. Her dedication to her coworkers and the Department of the Navy led her to be nominated and accepted into the esteemed American Society of Military Comptrollers, where she was recognized as the “Department of the Navy’s subject matter expert for accounting reconciliation.”
Karen shared a deep passion for bowling with her mom and team members, often bowling right after work and arriving home around 9 PM. Though tired, she would regale us with stories of her strikes and spares, lamenting how the “perfect game” still eluded her. However, she never failed to show up ready for work the next morning. We all hope Jesus grants her a lane to bowl the “perfect game!”
In addition to her love for bowling, Karen found immense joy in hockey and assembling puzzles. Many hours were spent assembling puzzles with her mom or watching hockey games with Jean. Karen's unwavering care and comfort for her mother during her time at the ranch showcased her angelic devotion and selfless nature.
Together with her husband, Karen developed West Crescent Ranch in Nokesville, VA, where her childhood love for horses blossomed. Balancing a full-time job, she would wake at 4:00 AM to tend to the horses before heading off to work, and her evenings were dedicated to stall cleaning and caring for them.
After retiring from the Department of the Navy, Karen found great peace tending to her horses and managing the infinite chores at the ranch. She never shied away from hard work and approached every task—whether mowing or working with a horse—with the passion that only a truly caring person could possess.
Karen was a fighter. For over 30 years, she battled cancer with a spirit that embodied zeal and tenacity reminiscent of a Marine. She never complained and persevered through the challenges she faced.
Preceded in her journey to heaven by her parents and two sisters, Susan and Gloria, Karen is survived by her husband, Peter, her sisters Carol and Loretta (husband Terry), niece Melissa, and nephews Sam and Chris Campbell, David Dill along with his children, and great nieces, Amelia Campbell and Aubree Dill.
Karen was baptized on June 5th, 2023, and accepted Jesus Christ as her savior. We are all profoundly grateful for having her in our lives as a friend, sister, aunt, and wife. Hold her in your memories with this thought: “May the candle of Karen’s life journey and caring nature forever shine brightly in your heart.”
In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to her husband, who will establish a fund dedicated to researching alternative technologies for cancer treatment.
